On Wednesday 14 March 2012, the students of Royal Military College Saint-Jean (RMC Saint-Jean) participated in a spoken arts evening, as part of Cultural Heritage Week. The main objective of the event was to educate the officer cadets, in an interactive way, about what Canadian poems and other language arts bring to our culture.
The night emphasized Canadian culture as well as the importance of bilingualism and multiculturalism within Canada. The night unfolded in various stages, allowing the officer cadets to interact with people who had written their own poems and listen to people reciting the works of various authors. Foreign officers who are currently studying at RMC Saint-Jean posted poems from their home countries, bringing a multicultural aspect to the night. These students come from Russia, Ukraine, Mali, Jamaica, Kenya, and Belize.
In the previous weeks, the officer cadets had written their own poems for a poetry contest. This contest was subdivided into four categories: French as a Second Language, English as a Second Language, bilingualism, and the officer cadet's choice of the best overall poem whose winner was voted by the entire wing.
Thanks to the generosity of the RMC Foundation donors, the winner of the best overall poem category received a $100 cash prize and a total of $625 in prizes were awarded to the winners in the four categories of the contest. The RMC Foundation's benevolent contribution to the event is a means to promote excellence in the Bilingualism component of the curriculum, as it encourages officer cadets to surpass themselves in their second language. In fact, the winners of each category showed great improvement in their second language. This evening of the spoken arts was an educational and fun filled event, and we can't wait for it to be repeated next year!

It is with great pleasure that I thank the RMC Foundation Donors for their assistance in the procurement of 39 DVDs to be used in the Second Language classrooms. These up to date DVDS are a great learning tool as they can assist beginners to become more familiar with the sound of French in a more natural environment. Their comprehension of the language can be enhanced with the use of sub titles in English for the lower levels and French sub titles for the more advanced levels.
The series of DVD's you have generously donated also include a strong French Canadian cultural content. They include movies that made it to the Oscars last year, like lncendie, and DVD's of other major Canadian events, such as Les doigts croches, Maurice Richard and others.
Your continued support will enhance the learning environment for our students and help them to achieve a higher understanding of the French culture and language. Article by: LCol (Ret'd) Jean Lord RMCC Language Centre Director
Saturday 10 March, all Officer Cadets of RMC Saint-Jean enjoyed a trip to Richelieu for brunch at a sugar shack courtesy of the generosity of the RMC Foundation Donors.
Typically Québécois come together around a table in March and April in order to share local delicacies and share a beautiful cultural outing. Indeed, the majority of English-speaking Officer Cadets enjoyed the output of all the different maple products. It is with great enthusiasm that the Officer Cadets visited the Sugar Shack, and travelled by carriage ride.
The main focus of this trip was to promote the bilingualism component at RMC Saint-Jean. This activity has been established by RMC Saint-Jean to enrich the culture of its students.
